Blocking of lectin-like adhesion molecules on pulmonary cells inhibits lung sarcoma L-1 colonization in BALB/c-mice

Summary Adhesion and inhibition experiments with pulmonary cells of BALB/c-mouse origin and syngeneic sarcoma L-1 cells indicated that L-fucose specific lectin-like adhesion molecules, presumably situated on pulmonary cell surfaces are (at least partly) responsible for the specificity of this cell-cell interaction. Addition of specific sugars and glycoconjugates (L-fucose and fucoidan, respectively) to the incubation medium evidently inhibited the adhesion process as quantified using radiolabelled tumor cells. Unspecific carbohydrates (e.g. D-galactose) did not affect the cellular interaction. In vivo, repeated administration of fucoidan (but not of unspecific glycoconjugates) significantly inhibited the settling of metastatic sarcoma L-1 cells in the lungs of BALB/c-mice. Therefore, when lectin-like adhesion molecules on pulmonary cells were blocked with competitive glycoconjugates, tumor cell colonization of the lung could be significantly inhibited.     

Peptidylarginine deiminase in rat and mouse hemopoietic cells

Summary Peptidylarginine (protein-L-arginine) deiminase activities have been demonstrated in extracts of rat and mouse peritoneal macrophages, bone marrow cells, splenic adherent cells, neutrophils, and mouse monocyte/macrophage cell lines. The enzyme in these cells is indistinguishable from the skeletal muscle enzyme with respect to immunochemical properties.

为了提高直接甲醇燃料电池燃料的效率,并使该系统微型化,提出了一种用于控制该系统中循环甲醇浓度的软测量算法。该算法利用甲醇浓度对电化学响应的特性,将电堆的电流、电压以及温度作为对浓度的响应参数,将每片电池作为传感原件,准确测量电池的电流、电压和温度。结果表明,采用该算法从实验结果推测值的甲醇浓度误差小于0.40%。该算法可用于微型燃料电池的开发。     

骨髓干细胞的可塑性及其在栓塞性疾病中的应用

栓塞性血管阻塞在急性心肌梗死、脑梗塞、血栓闭塞性脉管炎、糖尿病足等发病过程中起着重要作用。目前临床上针对这些疾病的治疗手段主要有：药物溶栓、血管旁路移植和介入手术等,多年来其治疗方法无实质性进展。上个世纪九十年代人们发现了干细胞新的生物学特性—可塑性,对干细胞可塑性的研究以及相关技术的发展为心脏病、老年痴呆、帕金森等的治疗带来了希望,也为栓塞性疾病的治疗开辟了新途径,有望成为治疗手段之一。     

白血病相关抑制物对正常人T淋巴细胞集落形成的影响

通过收集16例急性非淋巴细胞白血病(ANLL)病人的血清和外周血白血病细胞条件培养液(LCM),对血清和LCM中的白血病相关抑制物(LAI)对正常人T淋巴细胞集落(CFU-TL)形成的影响进行研究。发现16例病人的LAI对正常人CFU-TL均有抑制作用,而缓解期病人的LAI抑制作用甚弱。追踪观察11例病人:其中抑制率高于30％的6例患者治疗效果差;抑制率低于25％的5例患者治疗效果较好,达到完全缓解或部分缓解。结果提示ANLL病人的细胞免疫功能缺陷与LAI的存在有关。     

Retinal bipolar cells——A model for the study of neuronal signal integration

Being the functional basis of neural networks, neuronal signal integration has been currently becoming a hot point of neuroscience research. Active and passive membrane properties of retinal bipolar cells, temporal and spatial distribution of synaptic inputs to these cells are described, and modulation of signal integration characteristics of these cells under different retinal adaptation states is analyzed. In consideration of the functional and morphological properties of retinal bipolar cells, it is suggested that they may be an appropriate model for the study of neuronal signal integration.     

Integrins and cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular diseases involve abnormal cell-cell interactions leading to the development of atherosclerotic plaque, which when ruptured causes massive platelet activation and thrombus formation. Parts of a loose thrombus may detach to form an embolus, blocking circulation at a more distant point. The integrins are a family of adhesive cell receptors interacting with adhesive proteins or with counterreceptors on other cells. There is now solid evidence that the major integrin on platelets, the fibrinogen receptor α _IIb  β ₃ , has an important role in several aspects of cardiovascular diseases and that its regulated inhibition leads to a reduction in incidence and mortality due to these disorders. The development of α _IIb  β ₃ inhibitors is an important strategy of many pharmaceutical companies which foresee a large market for the treatment of acute conditions in surgery, the symptoms of chronic conditions and, it is hoped, maybe even the successful prophylaxis of these conditions. Although all the associated problems have not been solved, the undoubted improvements in patient care resulting from the first of these treatments in the clinic have stimulated further research on the role of integrins on other vascular cells in these processes and in the search for new inhibitors. Both the development of specific inhibitors and of mice with specific integrin subunit genes ablated have contributed to a better understanding of the function of integrins in development of the cardiovascular system.     

Hypersensitivity to endotoxin hepatotoxicity in rats with inflammatory lesions

Summary The ratio of sinusoidal nonparenchymal cells to hepatocytes in rat liver was significantly increased following induction of inflammation, and decreased after subsequent exposure to endotoxin, particularly in the region around the terminal portal venules. Rats with inflammatory lesions were more sensitive to endotoxin hepatocytotoxicity than normal controls, as judged from the dose-dependent increase in activity of serum transaminases and from the extent of liver tissue injury. In addition, these animals, which were already in a state of depletion of hepatic glycogen, demonstrated marked hyperglycemia 24 h after endotoxin administration in small doses of less than 2 mg/kg.
